Hagia Sophia

12/11/2001 Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) holds special meaning to me for so many reasons. For one, it was not originally built as a mosque. It was built as a church by the Byzantines over 1400 years ago, 900 years before the Ottoman Turks took Istanbul (Constantinople back then) and a millennia before Sinan built Suleymaniye Mosque. The Turks added the minarets and plastered over the mosaics to turn it into a mosque. (Ataturk made it a museum and uncovered some of the mosaics c.1930.) Turks, and Muslims in general for that matter, had no objections to adopting elements from other cultures. Although they had converted many churches with similar layouts to Higia Sophia, it was still a major influence on the typical design of mosques. I find this fascinating.
There’s more. Hagia Sophia was the world's largest enclosed space for a millennia. The center of the dome stands 184 feet high (56 meters). It could swallow a 20 story building. This was achieved by using a new architectural element called the Pendentive. Pendentives are the curved triangles that hold up the dome. In this case, there are four. They evenly transfer the weight of the dome down onto the four massive pillars. Pendentives replaced squinches, which can only go so far. (Their structural contribution is disputed.)

11/25/2002 AKA: haya sofia
4/14/2003 what do the mosaics symbolise
5/27/2003 The Ottoman Architect who helped us to see this monument today was Mimar Sinan. He not only added 3 minarets (fourth was added later)but also reinforcements to stabilise the building which had been devastated by earthquakes and re-built. The fresco's inside and the iconas were all ruined much before the Ottomans, by Latins who had looted the city during their famous iconoclast madness.
11/10/2003 The Church of Hagia Sophia [Haya Sophia] was the inspiration for Koca Sinan. It is thus rational to believe that from this church sprouted the genre of Ottoman Architecture as a whole. Pretty amazing, huh?
12/28/2003 it's a MOSQUE genius. not a church. in a country that is 99% muslim.
12/28/2003 It's a museum since 1934, and was a church for over 1 thousand years, and a mosque only for 500 years; also it has been built like a church, genius.

3/15/2006 im doing a report on the hagia sophia and i need to know what climate and biome it is in and also what is the exact latitude and longitude
4/10/2006 Vandalism is not a job of Turks. They preserved most of the churches after the conquer of istanbul. Yes they turned some of them into a mosque but without harming. Just covering all of the mosaics with a protective plaster. If this had not been done, now you would not be able to see those beauties there. And an interesting site those who wonders how Byzantine Istanbul looks like before the 1204 crusades. I think this siteis wonderful and the owner need to be appreciated. www.byzantium1200.com
4/25/2006 The hagia sophia is supper amazing ansd i love it i got married in the church...jk
7/8/2006 I believe its an amazing church, the ultimate church. When we had a tour in Istanbul we first went to the Blue Mosque where the tour guide told us "This is the first and best example of Ottoman Architecture"...And then we went opposite, to Agia Sophia... Which is the ultimate Byzantium-Greek example of architecture, and built some hundreds of years before the Blue Mosque...What i do not understand is why Turks cannot live today with the ancient historical side of their current land. The Minor Asia (Ephesus etc) was of Ionian Greek architecture and Istanbul a Byzantium city.
7/8/2006 It is really like if you went in Rome and the Italian would tell you, "this is Roman original architecture that we invented"....And then you visit Acropolis and you see something built 1000 years before Rome and you think..."hmmm....how original?" The thing is that Italians know about history, understand history and are fine with it. They do not do stupid propagandas. As a US tourist, i love when monuments are put into their true historical perspective.
7/8/2006 www.byzantium1200.com Its probably the best website i ever saw regarding Byzantium. And then after look at it, i ask my friends who said that Ottomans preserved ancient Byzantium monuments: WHERE EXACTLY ARE THESE TODAY??
Because it is a matter of civilisation. Turks where the only conquer of Greece that did not respect historical monuments. They even harmed Acropolis. Even Hitler ordered nobody to bomd Rome or Athens because of the ancient monuments.
9/4/2006 i was reading about the Hagia Sophia and it is pretty cool how they built it and how it is still standing today! you should go visit it it is so pretty!!
11/17/2006 Hello the current generation of the old world. Just look for "true history" objectively. And, don't try to change anything according to history. We don't have to be like them. I am a Muslim, I am a Turk, and I am a citizen of this world. And, I want peace for myself and others.

4/23/2007 its about time that you people of religion stop flexing your muscles, no its my church no its my mosque back-forth. if you cant be friendly accepting with each other whats the point of your religion please? be human human beings, that would be something. that is an awesome building, and it would be fantastic if everyone could enjoy it who wants to enjoy it - without claiming ownership!!! peace be!
