4/16/2004 Hagia Sophia is the only building in Istanbul that deserves admiration. After the Byzantine Empire days, the only thing the turks did is to copy.

2/27/2005 People .... If you are dweling into what belongs to whom and who did what to whom and why Constantinopole (NOT Constatinople) is now Istambul, you might reflect on this:
The undoubtebly strongest blow to the stability of the Byzantine Empire and its power to face the invading turks&co., was given by the none others than the western brother in faith. The fourth crusade took the form of the modern capitalist corporation, avant la lettre, distilating the essence of the contemporary pinacle of western "ethics" - money & profit coated in easier to swallow concept (read here religion, liberalism, modernism, and anything fashinonable for the current era). Briefly the high spirited and the declared noble purpose of the IV crusade ended in a booty and pilaging military operation. In 1204 Constantinopole was sieged, occupied, pilaged, burned, massacred and almost destroyed by the noble crusaders. Booty from Constatinopole can be seen today in Venice, for example, in St. Mark's Basilica.
I do not oversee the attitude of the othodox byzantine church as opressor at its turn nor I deisregard the time "standards" for dealing with enemies, but things have to be known and put into their right perspective.

2/27/2005 And another thing: ottoman architecture is not to be disregarded only because you haven't heard about. One of the greatest architects was Sinan Pasha, helped by the artistic inclination of the sultan Soleiman the Magnificent.
And the last one: as a Romanian I think I am entitled to say a lot about turks and their influence. Even so, most of the times it is not so straight forward.

Visitor 554 says ...
3/5/2007 Constantinople became instanbul in 1900's. The word istanbul simple means i stin polh or to the great city in Greek. It is a muslim city today, but in the early 1900's it was a city that inhabitited millions of Christians. Hagia Sofia or Holy wisdom is simply a reminder of that event. My suggestion look into early turkish history and seek out the truth yourselves.
Visitor 182 says ...
4/1/2007 do you know what is the purpose of the hagia sophia?

Visitor 432 says ...
