8/25/2002 HEY ! Forget to say Constantinople. Are you dreaming.Never...İstanbul captured 1.000 years ago by Turks & will belong to us till the doomsday even if you would try to use all kind nuclears and etc weepons...If you have courage try to get ISTANBUL with yours all world armies, but you cant..You and all the barbarians are timid, fickle and fainthearted.....

10/26/2003 It's easy to call Turks - that's us - "barbarian" as we have the city of Istanbul today, the most beautiful city of the world, but why do the western world keep forgetting what THEY had done to their so-called Constantinople on April 12, 1204?! Check out the Biography of the 39th Venetian Doge "Enrico I" and the Fourth Crusade to see the TRUE BARBARIAN!!! If you don't believe what you read, pay a visit to Venice to St. Marco Church. You will see four statues of horses taken from the Hippodrome! At least, we converted Ayasofya into a mosque, not used it as stables like the most barbarian ignorant Europe!!!
Visitor 909 says ...
10/26/2003 The Moorish stayed in Spain for 750 years, and they were forced to leave in 1492. Today, you can't see many working mosques or a top rank holy man in the Iberian Peninsula, where as the Greek Orthodox Patriarch's presence can be seen in Istanbul... I think I made my point...
By the way, the Greeks and the Romans were not the indigenous peoples of their lands. They, too, were nomadic, and as you call all nomads barbarians...
The Picture? It is wonderful. I love Hagia Sophia.

11/15/2003 I Love this Church, the hagia sophia is so wonderful

11/17/2003 This is not a good place for name-calling.
A lot of other things to talk about.

Does anyone know the name of a place in Istanbul with a tiled wall that is made of all different types of tile--collage-type?

Good pictures!
We should get some 3-D models on here...
Visitor 72 says ...
12/19/2003 yes we are the barbarian we captured ayasofya now what can you do... nothing.
just relax and enjoy.istanbul is a city in TURKEY REPUBLİC.and AYASOFYA is a mosque.but dont forget this barbarian teach you how to bath, bastards
Webmaster says ...12/26/2003 As the moderator, let me comment on this name-calling. I usually remove it from the other threads. But in this one, I only do a little pruning because I like how it demonstrates how ignorant people can be. Visitors should not take it to heart though. It's easy to say rude things when you're anonymous.

12/8/2004 I am also amazed at the misinformation displayed here and cannot help but add my own comments. I am struck with awe at Hagia Sofia/Ayasofya and have chosen to research it for my college senior paper. In the process, I have learned how it was used by both the Byzantines and the Ottoman Turks.(Let me point out that Christians sacked their own church in a crusade prior to the Ottoman siege in 1453) First, Constantinople comes from the Roman Emperor Constantine who founded the city. The Hagia Sofia was built in the form that it is today in 532 by the Roman Emperor Justinian. While it was a Christian church, it was highly respected, richly adorned and well maintained. It was known for its healing powers and held a place in both Christian and Muslim theology. Despite a sharp economic decline in the Byzantine empire, the Hagia Sophia was fully funded and in use up to the seige of May 1453 by the Ottoman forces led by Mehmed II. Mehmed II had the utmost respect for the Hagia SOphia, and his first action upon entering Constantinople was to proclaim the Hagia Sophia a mosque. He, and successive rulers continuously maintained the new Ayasofya and learned a great deal by observing how it was constructed. That is why it still stands today. Both the Byzantines and the Ottoman Turks respect this building. The Website is doing us a great honor for showing us these pictures. Thank You! -concerned Historian student

3/4/2005 Chuck's visit to Turkey had been serving to many visitors as well as native Turks looking for photos. I am still expecting ro see his special Basilica cistern photo, in which , amazingly, the fish in the cistern like a halucination is seen floating in the air, cos the surface reflection of the water is not visible. I also take this oppurtunity to send the Newman family my best wishes, and thank them for their hospitality to welcome me their guide in Turkey to be a welcomed friend as their guest in their lovely happy family house with two great children in New Jersey. Cheers - Oguz Kosebalaban www.welldoneturkey.com
Webmaster says ...3/9/2005 OGUZ! It's so nice to hear from you. Thank you for leaving such a nice comment. Isn't it funny to read all these comments? I get a great listing in Google because of them. I get a lot of hits on the About page with your photo on it. I can't find your new site but I did find your tennis page. Nice. Your visit was fun. I hope you get a chance to stop by again. 3/5/2007 Constantinople = Greek for Constantine's City
Hagia Sophia = Holy Wisdom
Istanbul? =(also derived from Greek meaning "in the city")
What is Turkish about any of this??

The Hagia Sophia was Christendom's greatest and most celebrated church. After parrying centuries of jihadi thrusts from Arabs, Constantinople was finally sacked by Turks in 1453, and Hagia Sophia's crosses were desecrated, its icons defaced. Along with thousands of other churches in the Byzantine Empire, it was immediately converted into a mosque and tall minarets of Islam were erected surrounding it.
It is difficult for many of you to understand the importance of this monument especially to Greek Orthodox Christians because you say it happened such a long time ago that it should not be a big deal right??
Ok well to put it into a vague perspective, imagine you country's capital city was taken over, so for many of you Americans let's say Washington was taken over and communist flags were erected outside of the White House, disrespecting everything that the White House stands for (Democracy, Freedom, Liberty etc...
It doesn't matter that 500 years have passed, the Hagia Sophia is the most symbolic monument of our faith, so please have some respect when you talk about this Church because for many people it is not just a historical building but a sacred place.

3/6/2007 It was 500 years ago. So what do you expect from us to do? Just leave? We've been living in Anatolia for 1000 years, and in Istanbul for 500 years. My ancestors took this land. Have can you blame us because of our ancestors? Do you really expect from us to give this land to you just because it was your land 1000 years ago? 1000 years ago the world was a different place. Everyone was fighting for land.Byzantine was part of Roman Empire and Roman Empire nearly invaded everywhere that time. They didn't give the land to their owners after that. They couldn't keep it. They lost it. We took this land and we had kept the land. Get over it! We are neighbors now. I like Greece and Greek people. When i visited Athens, i felt like i was at home.It was a wonderfull trip. We are all the children of Aegean Sea. We are alike. You have a nice country, we have a nice country. So lets get along peacefully. We can't go anywhere. This is our homeland now. You are always welcomed as our guests in this land.

3/18/2007 hagia sophia belongs to orthadox cristains in there hearts maybe not the teritory or the deed to the building, if most call it mosque than there being misled, this building was built as an orthadox church! yes the turks do rule now and simply kept the building standing becouse of its wonderfull buety, but at least when i go worship i will go to an orthadox church not a mosque proclaimed as a church, thoe be ware constantine the great may be dead now but no orthadox christian has forgoten his legacy when he proclaimed constantinople our capital, we ruled the known globe 2000 years ago and we can do it again so turks be ware of greeks bearing gifts as history is not forgoten and if conflict arises again remeber were fighting for something that was taken from us and we have crist in our hearts, so keep worshiping muslim faith in an orthadox church, we dont do that becouse were real especially in our beleifs, so if you fight for hagia sophia or constantinople MEGAS KOSTANTINOS is on our side yous know and fear our wrath becuose yous left hagia sophia standing!
